GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Geotechnical and Geological Assessment

One of the most important aspects to a successful implementation of any tunnel project is obtaining detailed knowledge of the geology to be encountered and the geotechnical aspects associated with the required design. Half of the delays and cost over-runs of projects are caused by ‘unforeseen ground conditions’ encountered once construction work has commenced.

Dr Bedi has been involved with specification of ground investigation regimes for various problems, and has published numerous peer reviewed publications on characterisation of geotechnical parameters. Bedi Consulting is also closely affiliated with industry renowned experts in this field.

Together, we are able to advise on best and most efficient means for selection of geotechnical and other relevant parameters, including on-site sampling, testing and information on all aspects of the ground including stratigraphy, soil parameters and groundwater conditions.

It is our best practice to always obtain a thorough geotechnical understanding that considers soil structure interaction. Our design engineers specialise in planning, and interpreting site investigations.

Numerical Engineering

We do not believe in ‘modelling for the sake of modelling’; rather we feel that numerical modelling should be applied as a tool to provide value in optimising design and to gain a better understanding of the geotechnical problem at hand. We develop models whose complexity is commensurate with the problem, and no more. We apply numerical models as and when required to develop design options, run parametric studies, model complex forms of ground/structure interaction problems and optimise designs.

To verify the numerical analysis results, our team adopts several other analysis techniques such as empirical analysis based on established rock mass classification systems to verify rock support, convergence confinement analyses, and analytical analysis to assess toe stability and strutting forces.

Dr. Bedi has written several peer reviewed articles regarding geotechnical numerical modelling, and all the team members have extensive experience in its application on numerous construction projects. We ensure that the modelling results are calibrated with the real performance of similar structures in similar geological ground conditions.

Settlement Analysis & Potential Damage Assessment

Dr. Bedi has considerable experience in undertaking potential damage assessments from complex, soft-ground SCL projects, especially in dense urban environments where protection of heritage listed infrastructure and live operational assets immediately adjacent to the excavation.

Dr. Bedi and various members of the team are regarded as industry experts in this field and have developed innovative techniques to facilitate construction whilst maintaining integrity of the ultimate clients asset, and providing assurance through the construction process.

Dr Bedi has published a number of peer reviewed papers on this subject as well as presenting researched and practical findings to the industry.

We tackle these types of problems by means of numerical modelling, where soil-structure interaction can be taken into account. We have developed a suite of design settlement assessment models for predicting surface settlements induced by tunnelling and construction of underground structures to estimate damage to buildings, infrastructure and other buried services.

  • Prediction of settlements using empirical and numerical analysis
  • Building impact assessment
  • Prediction of total slope changes
  • Impact assessment on other assets
